This afternoon, we decided to take a Sunday drive down Highway 43 into Newton County, toward the Boxley Valley. Want to come along?
Our goal was to find me some pretty old barns to shoot, and we found one that may be my favorite of all the barns I've collected so far:
How would you like to walk across a hanging footbridge
to get to your house?
Or drive across an Ozarks covered bridge?
My eagle-eyed outdoorsman spotted
lots of wildlife for me to shoot:
Did y'all know we have Rocky Mountain elk here in the Ozarks? Once native to the hills, they died out and were brought back in cattle trucks about 25 years ago from the Rockies. They have flourished in the Buffalo River area, to the point that the farmers in some places are really having
a problem with them breaking down fences
and eating up their pastures.
This is a young bull elk. I've never gotten one
this close before.

What a lovely Sunday drive! I think my husband would have to drive the car across the bridge, then I would walk across...I'm a big chicken!
I saw a raccoon in the woods this morning, but no elk.
Great pictures. I enjoyed the drive.
You never know what you will see in the Ozarks, I didn'tknow that they brought the elk back. I bet they will do some damage to your car. Your pictures are great. Have a wonderful day. Dawn
Thanks for the ride-along. "Are we there yet?"
Reading back my last comment aloud sounds more like an impatient child than a attempt at a joke, albeit a lame one. Sorry, no insult intended.
I'll shut-up now.
Oh my goodness, you see the most incredible sights! How beautiful. I should take some photos of the things I see on my drives around this city. Such different places we have. The contrasts would be fun to see.
Hey there! This is Joyce Good! You have a beautiful site and it will be so nice to communicate with you! Take care and I look forward to visiting with you on Xanga!
wow! Love it, love it, love it! That barn is amazing. I just drove through a new part of PA and enjoyed a few barns myself, but that one wins the prize. You are so gifted in the way you see things. And I would love to walk across that bridge.
I love your pictures...makes me want to make that drive again...maybe in October we'll do that. And I loved your column about using one's art....so good! Kind of puts it into the context of responsibility, doesn't it? Guess that comes with the art. Use it or lose it, maybe? I loved your comments about teaching. I doubt if many people take the time to think about what a gift REAL teachers have. It isn't a job, is it? What you described must be a surreal experience. (Makes me think of speaking in tongues....another sort of gift.) And congratulations to D on his novel being published! That is such exciting news....can't wait to read it. I guess many folks have a story written or just waiting to be written, but not many will ever actually see their story in print, and know that others are reading and enjoying it. When I first started writing for our local paper, I remember feeling like I was "undressing" for all the world to see...baring my thoughts, feelings and ideas....and wondering who would appreciate or relate or ridicule them. It would surely be even more so with a novel. Takes courage to do that...but such FUN, too!!!!
P.S. Hope you don't have to be "in the doghouse" too often.
Thank you for the ride in the country side and the hill .Your eagle eyes didn' t forget anything and you offer to us wonderful pictures . You are an excellent photographer , lover of nature .
Love
Michel
I spent my whole childhood in KY. Yes, I am a hillbilly as they call us. God sure does love hillbillies. HeHe
I love covered and swinging bridges. Your Sunday drive took me down memory lane. I had a wonderful time camping with family on Buckhorn mountain. We picked berries, roamed the hillsides, cooked over open fire, played in the streams, fished, and sat around the camp fire at night. We had lots of cousins join us on week-ends. I so wish I had pictures now. When I look back, we were poor coal miners but we sure had a lot of family creativity. When you have time look up on the web a place called Buckhorn Reservior Resort in KY. I can't imagine that this is the place where so much of my life was formed. Everything was primitive, but my mother made it so easy. I realize now all the hard work my mother did to make our life as enjoyable as possible. She was fun, laughed all the time, and never complained. My mother has dementia so it is good to reflect on all the good things is her life. Love you !!!!
