Last weekend, we drove over to Eureka Springs, and Doyle took me to Thorncrown Chapel, which I'd never seen. It's an absolutely lovely chapel in the woods, designed by E. Fay Jones, a well-known Arkansas architect, and opened in 1980. The chapel looks like it grew in the woods. It's been called "one of the finest religious spaces of modern times."

There's some cool stuff in Arkansas.
Wow 1980!!!! Not very old:) Glad you had a nice time:) Blessings, Gerrie
What a Chapel, it looks like its being used, I bet it's really pretty inside. Now for the question Who washes the windows???? Have a great day. Dawn
Wow! My Dh is an architect by degree...he will love to see this! You do take some of the most quaint day trips! I have to ask you...how did you get the writing in your header? I tried for hours yesterday, in a new xanga site I started, and it's still blank, I couldn't figure it out!
this building is just wonderful....it looks as if it is truly part of the woods,
My father was an architect and he used to get several different architecture related magazines. I remember seeing this chapel profiled in one of them and him saying how innovative he thought it was and how even years from that point in time, it would never look old. He was right. How awesome and beautiful to see it again through your eyes.
Thanks.
Fantastic! What an awesome space! You did it justice. Love your angles.
The coolest sanctuary I've seen -- even better than the cathedrals that I saw as a teenager in Europe -- is the one in Cairo, Egypt, which is actually carved into a mountain. It has a fairly low overhang on the entrance and then opens up into a beautiful sanctuary. All man-made. Apparently, the Coptic Christians were blasting this space into the mountain back in the days of British occupation; they weren't allowed to do this work, so they timed the dynamite explosions to coincide with the twice-daily cannons that would be fired by the British to mark morning and evening.
That space was awe-inspiring in a grandiose way. I think your woodland sanctuary has its own awe -- but it's more of a quiet exultation. Wouldn't you say?
So this is a chapel out in the middle of the woods? How interesting is that!! Does it ever get used?
Hello there! Thanks for stopping by my site! Nice to meet you!
My mom and dad grew up in Green Forest...I still have a ton of relatives in NW Arkansas! In fact, I have a xanga friend (nanachris), and we recently found out that her hubby and I are third cousins! Our grandmothers were first cousins...I think God is so cool! Christy works at the Harrison hospital maternity ward as a nurse. (Is there more than one hospital?)
So, to see you are from that area is sort of comforting to me...I have never lived in Arkansas...my parents moved to Wichita during WWII, but I have spent a lot of time there.
And your pictures are awesome!
